Native American tribes have been struggling to keep their traditions and culture alive since the territorial wars with Anglo-Americans began. After the 2020 pandemic swept through reservations with devastating loss – taking family members, taking elders – the weight of preserving those traditions fell even heavier on those who remained. For the Hualapai Tribe of Arizona, one of the smallest tribes in the United States, that weight is especially urgent. History has shown us more than once that when a tribe loses their elders, they risk losing everything – their language, their ceremonies, their identity. And history has shown us, a culture lost is gone forever.
